Sunday Brunch for Eyecycle

Eyecycle cyclists in front of SnoozeBrunch was on Eyecycle sponsor Polidori Sausage on Sunday, July 31! The cyclists left their meeting place of CCB (Colorado Center for the Blind) near downtown Littleton and rode North along the South Platte River to LoDo Denver. Brunch was at Snooze, located in the revamped Union Station. Snooze is a VERY popular breakfast restaurant that also happens to purchase its custom-recipe sausage from Polidori. It was a win-win-win situation. After a leisurely brunch, the cyclists headed back to Littleton to burn off some calories.

Eyecycle's Nathan Elder and Susan GenglerEyecycle vice president Nathan Elder was photographed at Union Station with his stoker, Susan Gengler. The photo was then used in an article written in Denver Water Department’s newsletter. Nathan is water resource engineer for Denver Water. Thanks Polidori Sausage (and Randie Polidori) for a great brunch!

Ride the Rockies 2016

Here’s a photo of Eyecycle Colorado’s Randie Polidori and Andre van Hall during their Ride the Rockies tour this June 12-16, 2016.

Great job Randie and Andre!

From the Denver Post:

Three … two … one, quietly says Andre van Hall, as he and riding partner Tim Jackson push off on their Santana tandem bicycle for the third leg of this year’s Ride The Rockies tour on Tuesday.

It is just after 6 a.m., and the temperature hovers around 35 degrees. A fresh coat of frost lines the mountaintops above, and ice coats the bicycle’s orange and maroon frame and two leather seats, leftover from the rain the day before. Jackson is captain, sitting in the front, and van Hall is the so-called “stoker” — the person pedaling behind.

van Hall, the former general manager of the Denver Athletic Club, is a full-time motivational speaker. Efforts like this 399-mile, six-day odyssey are easy to see why: In 2008, he lost his vision in his left eye, and the same degenerative disease then claimed the vision in his right eye three years later, in 2011.

Why we ride in the Tour de Cure Colorado…

Eyecycle rides because we are proud to do our part to Stop Diabetes! Eyecycle has been a part of the Tour de Cure Colorado for the past three years and we are excited to take on our fourth year riding to Stop Diabetes right here in Colorado. We initially decided to team up to change the future and make a positive impact in the lives of those who are affected by diabetes.

We are motivated to ride because our team members understand the link between diabetes and visual impairment. We are committed to ride and raise money in this inspirational event not because 29 million people in the United States have diabetes, but because we personally know some of them, and want to do something about it!

You can register to ride with us on August 15th at the Boulder County Fairgrounds in Longmont, Colorado! Just visit our Team Page and select “Join This Team” on the right side of the page. We are proud of all that our team members have accomplished. Most of our team members are blind and visually impaired and ride the 100K Route behind a volunteer captain who leads the way. In 2014, one of our team members even completed the 100 mile route!

If you can’t join us on August 15th, please consider supporting us!

By making a donation or joining our team, you will be helping the Association provide community-based education programs, protect the rights of people with diabetes and fund critical research for a cure.

As a team, united in our desire to Stop Diabetes, we are asking for your support. Please make a donation to one of our team members or become one of us by joining our team. When we bring together dedicated team members and kind donors, the power we have as a group far outweighs what any of us could do alone.

We are determined to reach our team goal, one rider at a time. So let’s get in gear and ride to Stop Diabetes!

To Boulder and Back

This past Saturday Eye Cycle went on a twenty six mile ride from Superior into Boulder and back. Between dodging the crowds and riding through a parade a fun time was had by all. We stopped for lunch at Old Chicago’s after the ride. We had seven bikes, and several new stoakers and captains. Everyone had a great time, and despite our best efforts no one was lost for long. Thanks to Scott for being our ride lead.

We have three more rides prior to the end of the cycling season, on 9-27, 10-12, and 10-25. If you are interested in joining us please send an e mail to the team lead for the week, and we would love to have you along.

Interested in captaining but concerned about learning to ride a tandem? Training is straightforward and takes very little time. Please consider joining us, as we are in need of captains for the remainder of this year and next season as well. Please contact our President at president@eyecyclecolorado.org if interested.

From the President: Tour de Cure 2014

WOW and CONGRATULATIONS to Team Eyecycle at the Tour De Cure on Saturday,  August 16th.

It takes a great deal of time and effort to prepare for a 100 mile ride or a 100K ride and we had fine representation from Team eyecycle. Team roster included Captains Jill Beckman, Rick Barcelow, and Scott Baumfalk.  Stokers included Susan Gengler, George Mcdermith and David Thomas. It was a hot day with temperatures in the mid 90 range,  and climbing around Carter Lake from the Boulder Fairgrounds was not easy as the heat became more and more intense.

CONGRATULATIONS to stoker athlete George Mcdermith for completing his first century ride on Saturday at the Tour de Cure with captain Scott.  It was a hot day and the course included elevation gain and of course distance. Captain Scott and George kept on going despite the heat and fatigue.  Fantastic job guys!

CONGRATULATIONS to stoker athlete  Susan Gengler for completing her first metric century  100K on Saturday at the Tour de Cure! Nice accomplishment with captain Jill.  Ladies rock!

CONGRATULATIONS to David Thomas for having another metric century under his belt. Dave is a great sport in the heat, rain and hail.  On a recent Eyecycle pancake ride, Dave and captain Randie got caught in a down pour that turned to hail and Dave is always rolling with the punches and smiling. This time he managed through the heat with captain Rick—thanks guys!

Much thanks and Eyecycle love to Team Lead Jill Beckman, for putting the team together, gathering up the bikes, changing out pedals, hauling  the tandems and making arrangements to ride.  It is a lot of work and everyone paid it forward  to the American Diabetes Association with contributions almost at the $2,000 mark to fight Diabetes, which is a leading cause of blindness.

Nice work gang!

Annual Auction and the Tour de Cure

August has been a successful and busy month for Eye Cycle. We had our annual auction on August 7th with Reggie Rivers and it was a blast! Reggie auctioned off a tandem cruiser, Manning jersey, and other great items. The silent auction was also a success. Many thanks to all those who partisipated, donated, and made the auction so enjoyable. Particular thanks goes out to our President Teresa for herding cats with this event. Pictures can be found at https://plus.google.com/photos/112052458422620855136/albums/6047108351305909297, as well as in our photo section on our Eye Cycle web site.

We were also involved in the 2014 Tour de Cure for Colorado. We raised funds to help find a cure for diabetes, one of the leading causes of blindness. We had three tandems out on the course, and completed both the metric century and century courses. The environment during the ride was electric and most encouraging. If you didn’t get the chance to partisipate this year, considering joining us next year for the 2015 Tour de Cure. Thanks to all those involved, and particularly to Jill for coordinating our team and involvement in the event.

On Facebook or Twitter? We are. Please like us on Facebook and follow us on Twitter.

Consider joining us for a ride, we need stoakers and captains, and all are welcome. Please look at our schedule for the remaining 2014 season and come along for the ride of a lifetime!

Annual Auction

It’s almost time! The annual auction for Eye Cycle Colorado is on August 7th, from 7-9pm and you don’t want to miss it.

This year Reggie Rivers will be auctioning off amazing items, including a Peyton Manning jersey and a bike ride with Reggie. There will be other items for sale in a silent auction, and the tapas and wine cannot be beat.

Tickets are $40 per person, and between the amazing food, wine, and items you won’t find a better deal anywhere- plus, your money goes to support Eye Cycle Colorado, which brings the joys of cycling to the blind of Denver and beyond.

Any questions, or in need of transportation? Please contact President@eyecyclecolorado.org. We eagerly look forward to seeing you!
